JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of a designated team leader, the HPC Systems Administrator will provide complex technical support including installation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem-solving in support of the University’s high performance computing environment.
This position will provide domain competency and technical support in system administration; confers with technical leadership in research, evaluation, and identification of technology solutions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure system compliance with the University's secure research infrastructure standards.
- NIST SP 800-171 Red Hat Linux environment.
- Ensure stable performance for the storage and compute environments through performance monitoring and tuning.
- Assist Project Managers, application admins, and technical staff in all aspects of daily work.
- Create and maintain documentation about technical and usage procedures and methodologies.
- Participate effectively as a team member on technical projects.
- Consult with and support the needs of researchers.
- Support a production environment during defined maintenance periods as well as outside of normal working hours to ensure minimal impact to users.
- Develop written requirements for all systems and subsystems, coordinates education, user documentation, and the handling of day-to-day problems.
- Assist with establishing and maintaining a change control procedure for user requirements including documentation updates.
- Establishes and monitors all aspects of interfaces with other systems and subsystems; works closely with other systems administrators on all matters involving the integration of systems.
- Assist with establishing equipment, personnel, and training requirements for users and potential users of the systems.
- Develops user system security, and monitors and oversees user security administration.
- Recommends decisions to Team Lead regarding conflicts among users.
- Assists in developing test and parallel procedures; participates in paralleling and determines when functions are ready for production.
- Documents procedures required for end user and administrative use of the systems.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Associate's degree and four years of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience; or six years of related experience.
- Basic knowledge of the Linux operating system.
- Familiarity with Bash shell.
- Understanding of performance tuning and capacity management.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proven presentation skills.
- Highly developed interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Capable of meeting deadlines and working under pressure.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for System Administrator 2
- Associate’s degree and six years of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience; or eight years of related experience. Knowledge and experience with software development using open-source tools.
- Ability to work effectively with vendors, staff, and users at all levels.
- Familiarity with HPC scheduling and resource management such as SLURM and Munge.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with performance tuning and capacity management.
- Familiarity with secure remote access (SSH, VPN).
- Familiarity with IPMI technologies such as iDRAC.
- Knowledge of basic networking technologies and protocols.
- Understanding of HPC cluster design.
- Proficient in Linux command shells and scripting.
- Considerable knowledge of systems design criteria as well as systems architecture.
- Familiarity with Ethernet and InfiniBand technologies.
- Experience with clustered file systems.
Additional Preferred Qualifications for System Administrator 2
- Experience with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), NIST SP 800-171, and/or Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model (CMMC) 2.0.
- Knowledge of NIST SP 800-171 CUI guidelines.
- Up-to-date certifications: Red Hat Certified Systems Administrator or Engineer.
- Knowledge of Linux integration with Active Directory, Kerberos, and 2FA.
