JOB SUMMARY

UConn Extension, a part of the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, at the University of Connecticut, seeks applicants for a full-time Educational Program Assistant 1 to work at the Department of Extension – Middlesex County Extension Center in Haddam, CT. The Educational Program Assistant 1 will report to the Center Coordinator of the Middlesex County Extension office and will provide administrative and program support to the Center. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists and provides support to Extension Educators working with programs which may include but not be limited to the Center for Land Use Education and Research (CLEAR), Forestry, Master Gardener, 4-H and other programs. 
  • Assists in explaining and providing educational program information and processes to Extension volunteers and participants.
  • Works with and helps develop and refine program databases using programs such as Excel and Access, to extrapolate relevant data sets, maintain program enrollments, membership and volunteer records and provide program reports to the Extension educators as required.
  • Maintains accurate records on each program and assembles databases and prepares statistical and/or historical reports for Extension Educators/Program Coordinators based on program outcomes.
  • Performs office support functions in support of educational programs; processes paperwork, records and files which may be computerized.
  • Supports Extension Educators/Program Coordinators in implementing and providing off-site educational activities in the community to improve practical understanding and accomplish program goals as time allows.
  • Assists assembling, arranging, organizing and dismantling program events and activity set-ups and arrangements at various locations and venues, e.g., classrooms, fairgrounds, community centers, etc. Lifts, carries, loads, unloads, and transports equipment, supplies, and/or program materials for educational events and workshops, such as laptops, projectors, tables, chairs, displays, and paper media. 
  • Supports media relations activities for various programs; assists others to write and edit programs and promotional materials for hard and soft copy publications and social media platforms.
  • Assists Extension Educators/Program Coordinators in assessing clients’ capacity to participate in programs and helping to incorporate related knowledge into program activities for greatest learning opportunities. 
  • Assists Extension Educators/Program Coordinators in implementing programs to enhance learning and provide appropriate content-based experiences to accomplish program goals. 
  • Under supervision, may provide educational training and conduct related support services on an on-going basis, and work to resolve problems in assigned area of responsibility. 
  • Assists with increasing community collaborations with partner groups. 
  • Assists Extension Educators/Program Coordinators with digital communications including website content updates, social media post creation and scheduling, and review communications analytics to ensure compliance with university branding standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related fields and up to one year of related experience; or an Associate's degree and two to three years of related experience; or four to five years of profession-based experience in administrative, communications, agriculture, environmental, 4-H or related fields.
  2. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including use of communication technologies and media platforms.  
  3. Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and other database software. 
  4. Demonstrated experience interacting with sensitivity and professionalism when serving diverse constituents, such as youth, families, and volunteers. 
  5. Demonstrated experience providing organizational support in a team environment. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of the Cooperative Extension System.
  2. Experience working with large databases and generating reports, such as the 4-H online registration.
  3. Experience participating with collaborative community partnerships.   
  4. Experience working with UConn administrative processes.
  5. Experience utilizing STEM (Science, Technology. Engineering and Mathematics) technology.
  6. Demonstrated experience in public relations utilizing electronic, social, and print media and platforms.
  7. Bilingual in Spanish and English.

The selected incumbent must be willing and able to work flexible and/or irregular hours, including occasional nights and weekends to help conduct programs at off-site locations. The selected incumbent must have reliable transportation to meet in-state travel requirements.
