JOB SUMMARY

The Institute of Materials Science (IMS) is seeking applicants for a full-time Grants and Contracts Associate to join IMS’s professional staff team. The Institute of Materials Science is an interdisciplinary institute with a threefold mission fostering education, research, and outreach in all areas of the materials sciences. The Institute’s research environment is fast-paced, with a large and diverse portfolio of sponsored awards. 

Under the supervision of IMS leadership, the incumbent will provide support to post-award sponsored program administration by performing fiscal and administrative duties related to management/reporting for the group’s sponsored research awards. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare, process, monitor, track, interpret, and maintain fiscal records for sponsored research accounts including payroll, purchasing, travel, and other disbursements to ensure compliance with federal, state, sponsor, and University policies.
  • Review published policies and guidelines to ensure compliance with funding agency guidelines for allowable costs, including salary, fringe benefits, purchase of equipment, matching funds required, etc.
  • Maintain internal records of grant awards and information related to budgets, cost transfers, extensions, advance account requests, increments, and closeouts.
  • Maintain and monitor award budgets, including preparation of budgets, forecasts, and financial reports.
  • Provide statistical information on grant and contract expenditures and compile regular reports utilizing electronic spreadsheets and databases.
  • Maintains project records and prepares project status reports (e.g. RPPR).
  • Review personnel commitments for both paid and unpaid effort, ensuring data is correctly certified within the University’s Effort Reporting System.
  • Serve as a liaison between the principal investigator and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze available information, draw conclusions and understandings, and present conclusions.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence related to financial and administrative issues.
  • Share information with Institute researchers in support of Grants and Contracts team goals.
  • Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of related experience; OR combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and independently manage small to mid-size projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three to five years of related experience.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to interpret and apply costing principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Experience using University of Connecticut systems (KFS, Concur, HuskyBuy, CoreCT, etc.).
  • Experience assisting with the management of grants and sponsored projects.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time position. The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience. This position could potentially have a hybrid work schedule, subject to authorization and University Policy. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
