JOB SUMMARY 

The School of Fine Arts (SFA) at the University of Connecticut is seeking applicants for the position of Academic Advisor 1 (P3). The successful candidate will provide academic advising primarily for first- and second-year School of Fine Arts students in partnership with SFA faculty advisors. The incumbent is expected to work with a dynamic team of professional and faculty advisors and administrative staff within the School of Fine Arts and across the University and its campuses to support students in their academic and personal goals by promoting and creating a student-centered environment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage a caseload of primarily first- and second-year students, providing individual, group, and drop-in advising services in both in-person and remote environments.
  • Advise students regarding graduation requirements, policies and procedures, academic notice and dismissals, and provide guidance and referrals to students with academic difficulties. Monitor student progress to identify and report any issues.
  • Advise students in specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice and scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver and substitution of requirements/deadlines, and related matters in conjunction with SFA Faculty Advisors.
  • Review student transcripts and assist in making decisions regarding change of major, requests for excess credit, double major or dual degrees, and/or minors. May assist with admissions questions.
  • Work closely with other SFA faculty and staff advisors to promote consistency and uniformity of judgments regarding such matters as enforcement of academic requirements, academic probation and dismissal, transfer in or out of the program, and other similar issues.
  • Communicate with undergraduates regarding departmental and university events and deadlines, as well as job, internship, and summer opportunities.
  • Provide data for basic statistical reports and maintain appropriate files and records. Write and/or edit informational and publicity materials.
  • Assist students, faculty, staff, and UConn administration with questions about undergraduate courses and curriculum.
  • Attend SFA Admissions, Enrollment, Advising, and other SFA school events, as needed or assigned.
  • Organize and deliver multiple orientation sessions for incoming students, but also ongoing individual and group advising sessions each semester.
  • Work closely with SFA faculty as well as SFA Admissions and Enrollment Services staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of position-related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support, OR advanced degree in a related field and one year of related experience in advising and/or counseling students or in providing academic support. 
  • Ability and knowledge to support undergraduate students, including first-generation college students and students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a team setting. 
  • Ability to build rapport with students, families, and University partners. 
  • Ability to work on occasional nights and weekends and travel occasionally for work purposes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in higher education, counseling, or a related discipline.
  • Advising experience in postsecondary/higher education institution(s).
  • Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Experience teaching or conducting workshops.
  • Knowledge of academic programs within the School of Fine Arts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems that interfere with the student’s academic progress and work effectively to resolve them.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook, PeopleSoft, and other database programs.
  • Knowledge of typical State and University policies and procedures.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month, permanent position. The starting salary is $57,505.
