JOB SUMMARY

Advises students about academic programs, plans of study, and/or policies as well as co-curricular opportunities and extracurricular engagement. Serves as an on-site resource person to faculty, staff, and students. Counsels and advises students on academic, career, personal goals, and post-graduation pathways. Contributes to planning and execution of summer bridge program components. Assists with student success programming, which includes advising, academic success, cultural and social enrichment, and career preparation activities for the Center for Access and Postsecondary Success (CAPS) to serve first-generation, low-income, and other students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advises students in personalized curriculum decisions including the appropriate choice of courses, career goals, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters.
  • Creates plans of study to support students in their educational needs, career goals, and professional development. Monitors students’ academic progress in cooperation with other University offices. Make recommendations for academic course offerings and enrichment programming based on students’ needs.
  • Audits student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements and to assess eligibility to graduate.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations regarding academic warning, probation, dismissal, and satisfactory academic progress standing.
  • Coordinates summer program scheduling, including course placement, orientation, registration, and opening and closing day logistics. Supports student orientation activities such as group advising/counseling and other workshops to acclimate students to the University.
  • Provides personal and other non-academic counseling, makes referrals to appropriate University offices for specialized attention as required, and connects students to campus resources to promote their transition, success, persistence, and timely graduation.
  • Provides post-graduation preparation support through facilitating and coordinating workshops, group activities, and one-on-one sessions through CAPS and/or campus partnerships.
  • Creates, maintains, and appropriately updates files, records, and student documentation and assists in compiling reports. Makes reports on student performance, engagement, and progress toward graduation. Contributes to program assessments and evaluations. Administers assessment tools used in academic, career, and personal counseling and interprets data.
  • Serves as an instructor for the First Year Experience (FYE) course.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in higher education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field, and three years of related professional experience, two of which must be at the higher educational level.
  • Experience working with first-generation, low-income students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience coordinating activities and events.
  • Experience with delivery of group presentations and/or teaching experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal, writing, and administrative skills.
  • Experience in data management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to provide general educational support, effectively implement recruiting strategies, and interpret educational records and related information.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree.
  • Three or more years of related experience in higher education.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

This is a full-time, permanent position. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA). The starting salary for this position will be $56,102.
