JOB SUMMARY
The Audette Lab of Flexible Sensory Processing (Psychological Sciences, UConn Storrs) is seeking a full-time research assistant. The successful candidate will provide administrative and technical research support to the lab while contributing directly to ongoing research projects. With experience, the Research Assistant will develop and execute an independent research project.
The goal of the Audette Lab is to understand how the brain combines sensory input with behavior and experience to shape perception. Research in the lab focuses on large-scale neural recordings in motor and auditory brain regions while mice perform acoustically enriched behaviors. We combine neural and behavioral data using computational approaches to link specific brain circuits and cell types to behavioral functions.
This position is an excellent opportunity for an organized and motivated individual preparing for a graduate career in Systems Neuroscience or related fields. The successful candidate will train in surgical and anatomical methods, behavioral paradigm design, electrophysiological recording, and data analysis. They will have the opportunity to build professional skills including scientific communication and to engage with the scientific community through research conferences and grant preparation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide administrative support and general lab management
- Coordinate and train undergraduate research team
- Work with vivarium staff to manage mouse colony
- Order and inventory equipment and reagents
- Attend and engage in laboratory meetings
- Learn and conduct experimental procedures including surgeries, histology, neural recording, and behavioral testing
- Contribute to data analysis and data presentation
- Develop and conduct an independent research project (optional)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience, Biology, Engineering, Psychology, or a related field.
- Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team with diverse skill sets and backgrounds.
- Track record of strong organizational and time management skills.
- Experience working in an academic research laboratory.
- Experience working with word processing, spreadsheets, and related computer programs.
- Enthusiasm for building the skills to perform systems neuroscience research.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working in a laboratory setting focused on Neuroscience, Biology, or a related field.
- Experience working with rodents as a model organism.
- Experience with survival surgery, viral expression vectors, and histological analysis.
- Experience programming in MATLAB, Python, or R for data analysis and/or software development.
- Experience using engineering skills related to electronic circuits, 3D printing design, or Arduino programming.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This Research Assistant position is a full-time, 12-month appointment that is annually renewable based on performance and funding availability. The desired start date is May-June 2025. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the American Association of University Professors UConn Chapter (AAUP).
