JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Ice Rink Manager, the Assistant Ice Rink Manager assists with the operation and maintenance of ice rinks at the UConn Storrs campus. This position assists with planning and scheduling routine and corrective maintenance for the rink facility, including the rink playing surface as well as support and spectator areas.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with management and coordination of maintenance operations to the ice rink at the Storrs campus.
- Ensures appropriate operating condition of mechanical systems associated with making and maintaining the ice playing surface as well as general building operating systems.
- Ensures appropriate operating condition and suitability of ice playing surface equipment.
- As directed by the Ice Rink Manager, use independent judgement and policy guideline standards to implement new operational methodologies, practices, technologies, and strategies to enhance or improve operational productivity or departmental proficiencies.
- Assists the Ice Rink Manager with planning and managing rink facilities and maintenance budget.
- Communicates and enforces all ice rink rules and regulations to ensure safe operating conditions for staff, patrons, and spectators.
- Works with UConn Athletics Department, UConn Recreation, as well as external customers to prioritize and schedule use of the playing surface for games, practices, and public skating events.
- Hires, trains, and supervise student and special payroll staff to meet operational needs.
- Assists in supervising and monitoring skate rental and skate sharpening services during applicable events.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in related field and one to two years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the degree and years requirement.
- Current knowledge of ice rink operations including skating surface production and maintenance.
- Experience operating an ice resurfacing machine such as a Zamboni or Olympia.
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written communication with a diverse audience both internal and external to the University.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and identify and resolve problems efficiently and effectively.
- Strong organizational skills including the ability to regularly set and manage time-sensitive priorities and work efficiently under critical deadlines while handling tasks simultaneously.
- Must be proficient in the use of computers and have skills in MS Office applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, electronic mail, internet applications and computerized maintenance management software programs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in NCAA hockey or similar venue operations.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate varying operational needs.
- Experience maintaining and managing budgets, records and data reporting.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make decisions in a timely and professional manner.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents will be required to drive and operate an Olympia (Zamboni).
- Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. You must be able lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Incumbent may be standing or walking a good part of the day with exposure to cold and noisy conditions.
- Incumbents must be able to walk and work on ice and slippery conditions.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Candidates must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Must have a willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
