INTRODUCTION

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has one job opening for a QCW Intern Utilities position at the Storrs Campus.  This position will receive on-the-job training and vocational education in order to complete the requirements of a QCW Utilities job classification within a period of time normally not to exceed two years. 

This QCW Intern Utilities position is a permanent, full-time, 1st Shift position 37.5 hours/week, with a work schedule of Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  This position offers a full benefits package including medical and dental insurance.  The hourly salary is $23.43 and is non-negotiable. Please note, the hourly salary is anticipated to increase, effective July 1, 2022.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff.  Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations.   Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends and holidays).  Please note that Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses.  A current motor vehicle license is required.

PLEASE NOTE:  ONCE THE CDL REQUIREMENT HAS BEEN MET AND THE ON-THE-JOB TRAINING PROGRAM HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED FOR THIS POSITION, WITHIN A PERIOD OF TIME NORMALLY NOT TO EXCEED TWO YEARS, APPOINTMENT WOULD THEN BE MADE TO THE JOB CLASSIFICATION OF QCW UTILITIES.  At the target level of QCW Utilities participation is required in the Weekly On-Call Rotation Schedule; when assigned to the on-call rotation, the assigned cell phone must be carried, and calls must be responded to during the on-call assignment within 15 minutes.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES 

Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in specification for the class of Qualified Craft Worker; receives on-the-job training to supplement prior vocational or technical training in respective trade area; performs increasingly difficult and skilled tasks requiring application of trade skills, codes and standard trade practices under supervision; assists in estimating time, personnel, and material needs on assigned projects; assists in maintenance of necessary records, logs, etc.; performs duties related to trade or similar trade areas as required; at state owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations; may be required to assist in snow removal operations during emergency situations; performs related duties as required.

At UConn, the QCW Intern (Utilities) will receive training in all aspects of the utilities trade.  Although this position is a 1st Shift position, some training may be required on other shifts, weekends or on overtime. This position will receive training from QCW Utilities employees.  He/she will work alongside of QCW Utilities employees to learn how to perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with national and local codes, along with how to apply standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the utilities trade. The QCW Intern Utilities employee will be provided with hands on and educational opportunities in the following examples of utilities tasks:  performs repairs and maintenance to water mains, sewer lines, manholes, catch basins, high pressure steam distribution, chilled water distribution and storm water systems; disassembles, cleans, overhauls and rebuilds motors, valves, pumps, filters and other pumping station equipment; cuts, shapes, drills and welds flat or metal pipe to fabricate for use in water and steam distribution systems; inspects and repairs steam traps and/or vaults fed by main system at various locations; operates heavy equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, backhoes, pipe saws, chain saws, jackhammers and various hand tools; cleans sewer lift station wet wells of grease and debris as needed; digs trenches, constructs trench boxes and removes pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods; interprets manuals, schematics, plant diagrams and drawings. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY 

Knowledge of standard tools, materials, methods and practices of particular trade area; some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to perform on a skilled level in particular trade; ability to make estimates and keep shop records; ability to follow written and oral instructions; some ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE 

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in the respective maintenance trade area.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED 

An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in automotive, plumbing, construction, electrical, HVAC or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  3. A Commercial Driver’s License will be required within the two-year period and prior to the appointment to the QCW Utilities job classification. Training will be provided. Once the CDL is obtained, it must be renewed and retained throughout employment with the University.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS 

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
