JOB SUMMARY

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut seeks applicants for a full-time position as an Academic Advisor (Academic Advisor I ). Under the supervision of the CLAS Academic Services Center, the incumbent will perform a variety of advising and administrative support functions for undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advise students in specific curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice and scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, requirements/deadlines and related matters.
  • Provide support to academically at-risk students.
  • Refers students to other student success services such as Career Services and Counseling and Mental Health Services, as appropriate.
  • Serve as a resource for students, faculty, parents, and others having questions about programs or academic policies and make referrals as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and implements programs to promote retention of students.
  • Audit student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements and to assess eligibility to graduate.
  • Assist in planning and implementing registration activities, graduation, Fall Visit/UConn Bound days, orientation programs, and other activities, as assigned.
  • Review and make recommendations regarding warning, probation, or dismissal.
  • Process changes to student records via PeopleSoft, maintaining accurate student files, and initiating and processing paperwork.
  • Maintain appropriate files and records, which may be computerized, and assists in compiling statistical reports.
  • Manage/assess data to recommend or implement modifications to practices and procedures to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Assist in writing and/or editing informational and publicity materials.
  • Act as dean’s designee on matters relating to degree requirements.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees, as required.
  • Support departmental advising.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, or a related field.
  • One to two years of post-baccalaureate experience in academic counseling or advising in an academic setting.
  • Experience in managing, compiling, and assessing data to inform advising practices.
  • Proven ability to multitask and manage high traffic during specific times of year.
  • Good communication skills and ability to relate well to students, faculty, and/or parents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in in Liberal Arts and Sciences, Higher Education and Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Three or more years of post-Graduate experience in academic counseling or advising undergraduate students in an academic setting.
  • Experience counseling or advising academically at-risk students in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate programs and degree requirements at the University of Connecticut.
  • Experience working with Peoplesoft or with other similar Higher Education systems.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
