JOB SUMMARY
This position in the University’s Information Technology Services department is responsible for designing, managing, and troubleshooting large and complex network systems for the University. Working under a supervisor's guidance, the position applies advanced skills in network design, configuration, and analysis, and documents the network installations. The position serves the network needs of academic, administrative, research programs and students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, review, and maintain documentation for the planning, testing, implementation, and use of network systems.
- Research and evaluate new network technologies and solutions for both hardware and software enhancements and be able to present and defend that research in a peer group environment.
- Monitor and maintain the high availability and functionality of university network systems.
- Using a broad knowledge of network hardware, software, and related systems to perform analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex network issues in large-scale systems.
- Provide emergency response and repair for network outages during on and off-peak hours as needed to ensure optimal service levels and minimize user disruption and network downtime.
- Provide technical support and guidance to users and other junior network administrators.
- Communicate plans and status of network systems to teams and/or the university community.
- Perform other duties as required.
Additional duties performed at the level of Network Administrator 3 include:
- Lead the design, planning, configuration, implementation, and support of modern network systems for medium to large projects.
- Ensure timely delivery of all project phases, from user data collection to network activation and testing.
- Participate or lead network services teams in disaster recovery exercises or related production incidents.
- Coordinate with vendors, clients, and internal teams to create network specifications, purchase equipment, and set up physical network infrastructure for voice, data, and video communication.
- May oversee one or more full-time or student staff members, as well as monitor the status of delegated responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Both Levels
- Associate’s degree in computer science or a discipline related to the field of computer networking and six years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in computer science or a discipline related to the field of computer networking and four years of related experience OR eight years of related experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people and be able to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to write specifications and document existing and planned network systems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
- Implementation and troubleshooting of layer 2-3 switching and routing technologies from a major network vendor (cisco, juniper, arista).
- Working knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, BGP) with an overall understanding of routing concepts.
- Experience with firewalls from a major vendor.
- Experience with modern network monitoring and management systems such as SolarWinds, PRTG, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to locations throughout the state.
- Ability to design, install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure and security systems.
- Experience monitoring network performance and troubleshooting issues using various tools and techniques.
Additional minimum qualifications for the level of Network Administrator 3 Only:
- Bachelor's degree and 6 years of documented experience, or 10 years total documented experience, in a networking field where the design and implementation of large-scale network systems was performed by the applicant.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage large or complex projects to achieve timely, successful completion.
- Display advanced knowledge and competency in implementing and troubleshooting high-level routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Network Administrator 2
- Demonstrated experience in the automation of processes using a scripting language.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more specialty areas such as VoIP, Wireless (Wi-Fi), Cloud Networking (Azure), and network monitoring/management systems.
Network Administrator 3
- Demonstrated experience in two or more specialty areas such as VoIP, Wireless, Cellular, SCADA, Cloud Networking (Azure), or Passive Optical Networks, in a medium to large-scale Enterprise environment.
- Relevant professional networking certifications (CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP, JNCIE, etc.).
- Experience in the development and execution of medium and long-term strategic/project plans.
- Demonstrated experience planning and implementing firewalls in a medium-large enterprise network environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of load balancing systems such as Citrix or F5.
- Experience in applying project management methodologies.
