JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut (UConn) Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Systems Administrator 2 to support and coordinate system operations for the College of Engineering. This position is responsible for Windows and Linux server administration, PowerShell development, vulnerability management, and assisting faculty with technology needs. While the role reports to ITS, the Systems Administrator will split time between ITS and the College of Engineering, working closely with both teams to ensure reliable and secure IT services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain existing PowerShell code for Engineering services.
  • Manage both virtual and physical systems for the College of Engineering.
  • Support Office 365 automation services, including automatic creation of Teams sites, calendar management, and distribution lists.
  • Ensure strong security posture and system reliability for critical infrastructure and services.
  • Review existing services for potential centralization.
  • Documentation & Policy: Create and maintain technical documentation, including standard operating procedures and security policies.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with researchers, IT colleagues, and stakeholders across different teams to meet project objectives and resolve issues.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about emerging technologies and recommend improvements.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks or projects assigned to support the broader enterprise systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education & Experience
    • Eight (8) years of directly related IT experience, OR
    • Associate’s degree in a relevant field plus six (6) years of related experience, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus four (4) years of related experience.
  2. PowerShell: experience and ability to manage existing code and create new scripts as needed.
  3. Windows / Linux server: demonstrated ability to fully manage Windows and Linux servers from installation, upgrading, software installs, patching, and troubleshooting.
  4. Microsoft 365 Knowledge: experience with and understanding of services such as Teams, SharePoint, and Distribution lists.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of system design/analysis, application design/development.
  6. Demonstrated skill in critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis.
  7. Demonstrated written communication and documentation skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience with Data management and reporting.
  2. Proven knowledge of Microsoft SQL database management.
  3. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and repositories.
  4. Experience with RedHat Satellite or puppet.
  5. Knowledge of intermediate/advanced infrastructure and security topics including networking, firewalls, threat detection, configuration management, vulnerability analysis, and multifactor authentication.
  6. Experience with Ansible or Ansible Automation Platform.
  7. Higher Education Experience: Previous experience in a higher education IT environment.
