JOB SUMMARY
The University of Connecticut (UConn) Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Systems Administrator 2 to support and coordinate technical operations within our Secure Research environment. This role focuses heavily on Microsoft 365 (Office 365) and Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure AD), including design, deployment, and ongoing management. In addition, the position will act as a task coordinator, ensuring technical requests and project tasks are tracked and completed on schedule.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage Office 365 for Secure Research: Configure and support email, SharePoint, Teams, and other Microsoft 365 services in a secure, Azure-based environment.
- Administer Microsoft Entra (Azure AD): Implement, maintain, and enforce policies, user management, and role-based access controls.
- Azure Government Knowledge: Keep current with Azure Government cloud features and best practices for secure research.
- Task Coordination: Receive and prioritize incoming requests, assign tasks to team members, and track progress to ensure timely and accurate completion.
- Documentation & Policy: Create and maintain technical documentation, including standard operating procedures and security policies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with researchers, IT colleagues, and stakeholders across different teams to meet project objectives and resolve issues.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about emerging Microsoft and Azure technologies and recommend improvements for the Secure Research environment.
- Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks or projects as assigned to support the broader Secure Research Infrastructure.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education & Experience:
- Eight (8) years of directly related IT experience, OR
- Associate’s degree in a relevant field plus six (6) years of related experience, OR
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus four (4) years of related experience.
- Microsoft 365 Expertise: Proven hands-on experience configuring, administering, and supporting Office 365 services (e.g., Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams).
- Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) Management: Familiarity with user administration, role-based access control, conditional access policies, and security best practices.
- Task Coordination / Project Management: Experience managing technical tasks, assignments, or small projects with cross-functional teams.
- Access Control Knowledge: Working knowledge of Active Directory user/groups or Azure RBAC roles.
- US Citizenship: Required due to security regulations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Regulatory Compliance: Experience working with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), NIST SP 800-171, and/or CMMC 2.0.
- Azure Virtual Desktop: Familiarity with provisioning and managing virtual desktop infrastructure in Azure.
- Microsoft Azure Administration: Hands-on experience deploying virtual machines, storage accounts, creating resource groups, and managing Azure subscriptions.
- Network & Security: Understanding of firewall policies, Azure Network Security Groups, and general network configuration (e.g., virtual networks, subnets, public/private endpoints).
- OS Administration: Experience managing Windows and/or Linux servers in a production environment.
- Scripting and Automation: Proficiency with PowerShell, Ansible, Azure CLI, or other automation tools.
- Higher Education Experience: Previous experience in a higher education IT environment.
