JOB SUMMARY

Advises graduate students about academic programs, plans of study, and policies. Counsels students regarding appropriate educational and career goals. Provides administrative oversight for the coordination and implementation of programs intended to increase student retention and academic success. Provides administrative support to the Office of Student & Academic Services.

Works under the supervision of the Director of Student & Academic Services (Educational Program Manager 1). Coordinates academic advising and supports for online students with the MSW Program Director.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages a caseload of MSW online students (and may support in-person MSW students), providing individual, group, and drop-in advising services, academic program planning, and support for course planning and selection. Explains MSW program policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Creates MSW program plans and course checklists for students to ensure that students meet the requirements for degree completion and graduation.
  • Monitors student progress and proactively addresses challenges that may impact academic success or retention.
  • Discusses students’ status regarding academic warning, probation, or dismissal and provides recommendations for students who submit appeals.
  • Reviews and enforces academic program requirements and enrollment restrictions for the School of Social Work.
  • Coordinates and implements programs to promote retention of MSW online students, particularly for unique populations such as transfer students, international students, and academic warning/probation students.
  • Coordinates between the Graduate School and the Registrar’s office for course registration, admissions, and academic audits on MSW students’ final Plans of Study.
  • Manages and facilitates registration refresher sessions for MSW online students, including scheduling and content building.
  • Audits incoming MSW online student documents to ensure completion and accuracy.
  • Coordinates and assists in the facilitation and scheduling of orientation and advising sessions for incoming MSW online students.
  • Oversees MSW website pages pertaining to academic and student services for students.
  • Assists in the planning, coordination, and execution of program events for the School of Social Work Office of Student & Academic Services (OSAS).
  • May serve on the School of Social Work, Hartford Campus, or University committee(s).
  • Performs related work as required. May involve occasional weekend and/or evening work for student-focused events.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, or a related field and three years of experience in academic advising/counseling or related experience. OR Master’s degree in social work, education, or a related field and one year of experience in academic advising/counseling or related experience.
  • Experience in the interpretation of academic policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and experience building rapport and establishing trust with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience taking initiative on projects.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience maintaining the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries.
  • Experience developing and maintaining effective and appropriate working relationships.
  • Proven ability to analyze available information, draw conclusions and understandings, and present such conclusions effectively to senior management.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Experience working independently as well as collaboratively.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the mission and goals of social work education and ensuring adherence to relevant policies, procedures and academic program requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce and analyze relevant reports and collaborate with students, faculty, the university, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or understanding of DEI/Anti-Racism.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, end-dated appointment. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $65,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
