JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a designated team lead, the Network Administrator will provide complex technical support including installation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem solving in support of the University’s wired and wireless network environment.

This position will provide domain competency and technical support in network system administration; confer with technical leadership in research, evaluation, and identification of technology solutions; and provide domain competency and technical support in system administration of the university wired and wireless network and voice services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports Network Operations including installation, provisioning, operating, tuning, upgrading, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of wired and wireless network systems.
  • Ensures stable performance for the wired and wireless network environments through performance monitoring and tuning.
  • Consults with senior network staff and end users to resolve problems with network systems and/or services.
  • Works with systems integration issues including activities associated with wired and wireless network technology.
  • Supports senior technical personnel with installation, upgrade, and maintenance of network systems.
  • Use standard diagnostic techniques to analyze, identify, and solve problems.
  • Creates and maintains documentation about technical and usage procedures and methodologies.
  • Participates effectively as a team member on technical projects.
  • Responds to emergency network or departmental service outages and repair requests, which may include working outside of normal business hours.
  • May travel to regional campus and remote sites.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Additional Job Duties for Network Administrator 2

  • Develops written requirements for all wired and wireless network systems and subsystems.
  • Coordinates education and end user documentation.
  • Writes scripts and/or basic programs to assist with managing systems.
  • Implement new system hardware configurations.
  • Establishes and monitors all aspects of interfaces with other systems and subsystems; works closely with other systems administrators on all matters involving the integration of systems.
  • Develop plans and processes to ensure the availability of services or systems.
  • Assists in developing test procedures and determines when functions are ready for production.
  • Documents procedures required for end user and administrative use of the systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be a US citizen.
  2. Associates degree in computer science or related discipline and four years of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline and two years of experience; OR six years of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of wired and wireless network technologies.
  4. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  5. Proven presentation skills.
  6. Ability to work in a team environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for appointment as Network Administrator 2:

  1. Associates degree in computer science or related discipline and six years of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related discipline and four years of experience; OR Eight years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of scripting languages.
  3. Proven ability to work effectively with vendors, staff, and users at all levels.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in Cisco wireless networking systems.
  2. Working experience with Python and Ansible scripting language.
  3. Working experience with Cisco networking technologies and protocols. 
  4. Working experience with fiber optic technology.
  5. Working experience with network monitoring applications.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for appointment as Network Administrator 2:

  1. Working experience with Cisco Identity Services Engine.
  2. Working experience with Cisco Catalyst Center.
  3. Working experience with Infoblox DDI.
  4. Working experience with Cisco and Juniper Mist wireless technologies.
