JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of the Asian American Cultural Center (AsACC), the Assistant Director is responsible for the internal operation of the Center, assists in program development and execution, provides assistance to promote Asian/Asian American student success and helps in fostering partnerships across campus and beyond.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, training, work schedules, and evaluation of the student staff and practicum students.
  • Develop, advise, and inform the staff and users of the Center regarding policies, procedures, personnel issues, and other matters pertaining to effective and efficient operations of the AsACC; update and maintain operation manuals for the AsACC.
  • Assist in the planning, coordinating, and marketing of all programs for the AsACC.
  • Collaborate and be the Center lead in developing new programs and initiatives with other cultural centers and program offices within the Office for Student Life & Enrollment and other University offices/department.
  • Provide support, advocacy, and/or resource/referral information, as needed to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Coordinate the annual Senior Banquet and the multiple scholarship awards process.
  • Serve as the AsACC liaison to the Asian American Alumni Association and assist in the development of joint programming to foster continued connection among students and alumni.
  • Research grants and other funding opportunities for the AsACC.
  • Represent the AsACC at meetings with other University offices or external groups as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. UConn employee on regular payroll.
  2. Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related professional experience in an Asian American/multicultural center or non-profit/community setting or similar field of work.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of the Asian/Asian American community and ability to apply theories of identity and student development to carry out the mission of the Asian American Cultural Center.
  4. Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the public, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external agencies.
  5. Proven ability to evaluate, problem-solve, and troubleshoot to resolve difficult situations.
  6. Experience with supervision and evaluation of student staff.
  7. Demonstrated effective organizational, operational, and management skills.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in Student Affairs, counseling, or a related specialty area.
  2. More than 2 years of related professional experience in an Asian American/multicultural center or non-profit/community setting or similar field of work.
  3. Training in diversity education, social justice, cultural competency, or other related fields.
  4. Knowledge of assessment evaluation related to student learning and development.
  5. Experience working with student organizations.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The hiring range for this position is $55,000 to $70,126. An offer of employment, if made, will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s skill and experience, as determined by the University.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This position is a full-time, 12-month position and requires occasional night and weekend hours.  Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
