INTRODUCTION

UConn’s Marine Sciences Department has one job opening for a Research Vessel Engineer position at the Avery Point Campus. This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week position over a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of extension beyond this initial 12-month period. The hourly salary is $29.66/hour and is non-negotiable. These positions offer a full benefits package including medical and dental insurance.

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff.  Must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends holidays).

GENERAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • On large research vessels, assumes responsibility for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Diagnoses and troubleshoots electronic navigation systems including global positioning systems and radar.
  • Maintains an adequate stock of supplies for emergency repairs.
  • On smaller research vessels, acts as ship's pilot, navigating and commanding assigned ships.
  • Constructs and repairs research apparatus.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports.
  • Performs related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AT UCONN AVERY POINT

  • On 90’ research vessel, assumes responsibility for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems.
  • Maintains an adequate stock of supplies.
  • Act as mate and 2nd license on trips over 12 hours; this includes navigation and maneuvering of the vessel at night, restricted visibility in bad weather, and during scientific operations.
  • Constructs and repairs specialized equipment.
  • Operate cranes, winches, davits and forklifts.
  • Keeps records and prepares reports.
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of engines and ancillary equipment of powered vessels.
  • Knowledge of all types of navigational equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel engine inboard motor vessels operating both in offshore and coastal waters.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience operating shipboard cranes and winches.
  2. Experience operating forklifts.
  3. Experience operating Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning Systems.
  4. Experience on research vessels and working with scientists.
  5. Possession of Radar Unlimited endorsement.
  6. Completion of STCW 95 Basic Safety Training.
  7. Previous command experience on vessels of similar style and size.
  8. Holding a QMED or other USCG engine room certification.
  9. Welding experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications including a U.S. Coast Guard license.
  2. A minimum 150-ton near coastal mate license is required.
  3. Incumbents in this role may need to obtain and maintain STCW Basic certification. Additionally, the position may require a willingness and ability to acquire US Coast Guard engineering documentation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  2. A physical examination may be required.
  3. Must be able to climb ladders and steep steps.
  4. Must be able to maneuver in tight spaces including tanks. May require kneeling and crawling.
  5. Participation in USCG approved random drug testing program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and to discomfort from extreme weather conditions, noise, and fumes.
  • The vessel operates 24 hours a day and may be away from its home port for up to two weeks at a time.
  • Expected to reside in shared onboard accommodations with fellow crew members.
