JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Linguistics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, is accepting applications for a Lab Manager (Research Assistant 1) in the Sign Linguistics and Language Acquisition Lab. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2024. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding. We seek a highly organized, detail-oriented leader capable of coordinating multiple research projects at the same time. The lab's research projects will focus on the analysis of the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) and English by deaf children and their hearing parents. Travel and non-business hours are occasionally expected.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The position involves management of the day-to-day activities of the Sign Linguistics and Language Acquisition Laboratory. Duties may include supervision of student research assistants, coordination of activities across collaborating labs, communication with families participating in our research, organizing/scheduling data collection sessions, running data collection, maintaining study records training, supervising annotators, doing annotation or coding of data, preparing data for presentation, attending lab meetings, study-related email, and other tasks as directed by your supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed requirements for a B.A./B.S. (or foreign equivalent) in Linguistics or a related field by start date of employment.
  • Evidence of strong research-related skills, including good organization, attention to detail, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • General computer skills, and leadership potential.
  • Ability to work autonomously without heavy supervision.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluency in American Sign Language.
  • Experience with ELAN software.
  • Facility with database software (Excel or similar).
  • Experience with recruitment.
  • Website and social media skills.
