JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut seeks a dynamic and multi-talented Theater Operations Manager to oversee the operation of von der Mehden Recital Hall. This is a full-time, eleven-month staff position in the Department of Music beginning in August. The 420-seat hall is the Department’s primary performance space, hosting around 130 separate events per academic year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities include management of the hall’s calendar of events and on-campus publicity (primarily through listervs and websites, but also through social media); hiring, training, and overseeing student box office workers, ushers, stage hands, recording technicians, and light board operators; managing the hall’s budget in conjunction with the Head of the Department of Music; oversight of setup and strike of stage equipment (music stands, chairs, risers, and large instruments) in a variety of configurations; maintenance and troubleshooting of the hall’s lighting, sound amplification, sound recording, and video/audio streaming infrastructure; and general responsibility for the audience experience in the hall. The successful candidate will have an abiding interest in and understanding of the performing arts, particularly their technical aspects; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; and the ability to train and manage non-specialist college students. Skills in publicity, marketing, and social media are also desirable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the duties of the position (technical theater, music production, dramatic or music performance, arts administration, etc.)
  2. Six years of experience in the realm of professional concert and/or theater production or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in a field related to the duties of the position (technical theater, music production, dramatic or music performance, arts administration, etc.).
