The Department of Residential Life
The Department of Residential Life plays a vital role in the success of the University of Connecticut and its students by providing quality facilities, personnel, services, and programs that contribute to the mission of the University. UConn Residential Life enhances students’ personal, interpersonal, and intellectual growth by creating safe and inclusive environments, innovative programs, and fostering meaningful relationships.
Our comprehensive, student-centered, residential program currently houses over 14,600 students on two campuses. Approximately 65% of the undergraduate population resides in university-managed housing. We offer our students an array of housing facilities and options to enhance their learning experience, including a variety of learning communities and special interest housing options. The University plans to expand housing to all UConn regional campuses over the next few years.
Residential Life consists of two key departments, Housing Services and Residence Education. Both departments work cooperatively together and with key campus partners such as Facilities Operations, Dean of Students, Public Safety, Community Standards, First Year Programs, Honors, Athletics, Center for Students with Disabilities, among others.
Summary of the Associate Director of Regional Campus Residential Programs
The Associate Director of Regional Campus Residential Programs is responsible for the strategic direction and oversight of the effective functioning and the operations of all Residential Life programs, including operating procedures, education, facilities, and staffing provided on the UConn Regional Campuses. The associate director will develop, implement, and evaluate goals and objectives of the Residential Life regional campus services and program direction. The associate director has experience related to Residential Life best practices and will participate in the development of policies and procedures for the regional campus operations. While all regional campuses are unique, the Associate Director will work to develop efficiencies where possible. This position does not currently exist and will be further developed by the successful candidate.
This position will report to the Director of Residential Life. To be effective, this position needs to work in close collaboration with leaders and staff throughout Residential Life, the Regional Campuses, and the University. The Associate Director will share time between all regional campuses and the Storrs campus with a home base in Storrs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide administrative and operational oversight for the Residential Life programs located at UConn regional campuses. This includes Residence Education, DEI initiatives, all student and professional staffing, and Student Welfare.
- Direct the student life programs in the regional residence halls in collaboration with key Residential Life staff to duplicate and adjust existing programs to use at the regional campus.
- Work collaboratively with Housing Services staff related to occupancy management issues, processes, education, outreach activities, opening and closing of the residence halls, and all related logistics.
- Support and assist assistant directors at the regional campuses in their relationships with property managers, university facilities staff, and other service providers for the regional residence halls.
- Regularly inform Regional Campus Deans and regional campus leadership of Residential Life services and goals, and partner with them to determine student needs and future goals specific to each regional campus population.
- Collaborate with property managers and/or facilities staff related to any maintenance, housekeeping, all projects and renovations, furniture and appliance purchases.
- In coordination with department leadership, develop and implement a strategic plan to meet the needs of the regional residential life programs along with university and department goals.
- Serve as a critical link and program liaison with key departments as appropriate while articulating the Residential Living and Education mission. Key departments the associate director will work closely with are: SHaW, Dining Services, Care Team, Parking Services, Division of Public Safety, etc.
- Prepare, submit, and administer the budget for the regional campuses.
- Collect and analyze the program data and participate in evaluating program effectiveness. Identify problems and make necessary changes.
- Assist and/or be responsible for assigned projects, programs, or services, which may be ongoing or short-term.
- Participate in various committees and work groups.
- May be required to serve in an on-call rotation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.
- Six years full-time progressive professional experience in higher education, including one year serving as a supervisor of a moderately sized department or unit charged with carrying out cross-disciplinary tasks or functions.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a complex management structure and understanding the necessity for collaborative relationships with key internal and external partners.
- Clear commitment to, demonstrated understanding of, and experience working with diverse populations.
- Articulated knowledge of the trends related to college students, including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with the Residential Life program with crisis management responsibilities.
- Prior experience with a multi-campus college or university.
- Experience with property management companies.
- 10 or more years full-time progressive professional experience in higher education
