JOB SUMMARY
The University of Connecticut (UConn) Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Systems Administrator to support and coordinate technical operations within our Secure Research environment. This role focuses heavily on Microsoft 365 (Office 365) and Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure AD), including design, deployment, and ongoing management. In addition, the position will act as a task coordinator, ensuring technical requests and project tasks are tracked and completed on schedule.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implements and maintains Data Loss Prevention (DLP) strategies to ensure compliance with university policies and security best practices.
- Designs, architects, and administers M365 services, including Email, SharePoint, Teams, and Microsoft Purview.
- Ensures strong security posture and system reliability for critical infrastructure and services.
- Communicate with stakeholders, IT professionals, and the University community regarding DLP services.
- Documentation & Policy: Creates and maintains technical documentation, including standard operating procedures and security policies.
- Collaboration: Works closely with researchers, IT colleagues, and stakeholders across different teams to meet project objectives and resolve issues.
- Continuous Improvement: Stays informed about emerging Microsoft and Azure technologies and recommend improvements.
- Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks or projects as assigned to support the broader communications and collaboration infrastructure.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 2 LEVEL
- (SA2 Only) Education & Experience
- Eight (8) years of directly related IT experience, OR
- Associate’s degree in a relevant field plus six (6) years of related experience, OR
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus four (4) years of related experience.
- (SA2 Only) Microsoft 365 Expertise: Administering Purview (or similar DLP solution) for Data Loss Preventions.
- (SA2 Only) Microsoft 365 Expertise: Proven hands-on experience configuring, administering, and supporting Office 365 services (e.g., Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams).
- (SA2 Only) Knowledge of system design/analysis, application design/development, and programming.
- (SA2 Only) Demonstrated skill in critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis.
- (SA2 Only) Proven written communication and documentation skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 3 LEVEL
- (SA3 Only) Education & Experience
- Ten (10) years of directly related IT experience, OR
- Associate’s degree in a relevant field plus eight (8) years of related experience, OR
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus six (6) years of related experience.
- (SA3 Only) Experience leading the administration and optimization of Microsoft Purview (or equivalent DLP tools), ensuring enterprise-wide data protection and compliance.
- (SA3 Only) Experience managing and securing Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, Entra ID), including integration, automation, and advanced security configurations.
- (SA3 Only) Experience in system design/analysis, application design/development, and programming.
- (SA3 Only) Experience in training end users in technology.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 2 LEVEL
- (SA2 Only) Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) Management: Familiarity with user administration, role-based access control, conditional access policies, and security best practices.
- (SA2 Only) Task Coordination/Project Management: Experience managing technical tasks, assignments, or small projects with cross-functional teams.
- (SA2 Only) Proficient in PowerShell.
- (SA2 Only) Experience with automating business processes.
- (SA2 Only) Knowledge of intermediate/advanced infrastructure and security topics including networking, firewalls, threat detection, configuration management, vulnerability analysis, and multifactor authentication.
- (SA2 Only) Higher Education Experience: Previous experience in a higher education IT environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 3 LEVEL
- (SA3 Only) Experience managing identity and access, including conditional access, RBAC, identity governance, and security policy enforcement.
- (SA3 Only) Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives, manage timelines, and deliver outcomes on mid-size to large-scale projects.
- (SA3 Only) Experience designing and implementing automated workflows to streamline business and IT operations using tools such as Power Automate, Logic Apps, or scripting.
- (SA3 Only) Strong understanding of enterprise infrastructure and security, including networking, firewalls, threat detection, vulnerability management, and MFA strategies.
- (SA3 Only) Familiarity with policy writing and implementation.

Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's background and experience.
