Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Recreation, the Assistant Director of Risk Management and Safety, is responsible for the administration of UConn Recreation’s comprehensive safety and risk management program. This position serves as a specialized and advanced resource for department personnel, developing and promoting internal and external risk management and safety outcomes including Athletic Training, Emergency Response Planning, Environmental Health, and Safety Employee Training while supporting a professional culture that is safety first. Implements a wide variety of practices designed to ensure department performance and provide industry-standard service to participants. Weekend and evening work is required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as department safety officer. Coordinate work internally with all department personnel and externally with EHS, Human Resources, Athletic Training Medical Staff, Student Health and Wellness, and Public Safety to ensure the department meets industry standards and achieves university compliance.
- Develop and implement safety and risk management practices and procedures for all department facilities and programs.
- Set annual safety program compliance schedule for the department. Ensure all units meet compliance and promote safety in all facets of daily operation.
- Oversee risk management and safety program compliance obligations in department systems of record utilizing Husky SMS, Healthy Roster, Connect2Concepts, and Fusion
- Provide annual review and update of department emergency response plans (ERP) and training materials. Instruct ERP for professional and student staff.
- Collect data and assess safety program outcomes; Develop performance measures to gauge the effectiveness of the program and recommend necessary modifications to the Executive Director.
- Develop internal training materials to support professional and student staff performance.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and accessible records related to all UConn Recreation participant health and safety. Maintain an accessible database of year-to-year records.
- Manage department athletic training coverage for club sport team competitions, practices, and department special events.
- Supervises department Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainers.
- Coordinate with athletic training medical director, graduate assistant athletic trainers, third-party providers, and club sports athletes on post-injury referral and return to play compliance.
- Manage approved budget and expenditure. Assists in identifying resources and funding sources as needed.
- Procure, inspect, maintain, and inventory department health and safety equipment.
- Coordinate with the American Red Cross to provide CPR/First Aid/AED classes for employees and the UConn community.
- Drive department vehicles in support of satellite operations including implementation and supervision of scheduled special events.
- Participate in various committees and advisory groups. Lead the department’s Risk Management and Safety Work Team.
- Provide direct support of events hosted by UConn Recreation.
- Additional duties as requested by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and six to seven years of related experience. Two years of experience must be serving as an advanced/senior team member or working as a project lead. OR Master’s degree in a related field and four years of related experience.
- Current Adult CPR/AED Certification or ability to acquire within six (6) months of hire.
- Demonstrated understanding of, stated commitment to, and/or experience working with diverse populations.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- American Red Cross CPR/AED instructor.
- Certified Athletic Trainer.
- Previous experience working with OSHA/Workplace Safety Requirements.
- Previous experience developing institutional Emergency Response Plans.
- Valid Connecticut Athletic Trainer State License or eligible to receive within 2 months.
- Current Basic Life Support certification.
- Experience with department software applications (Husky SMS, Healthy Roster, Connect2Concepts, Fusion).
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, permanent position requiring flexibility to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays. A valid driver’s license is necessary to operate a university vehicle for travel to satellite locations for safety and inspection purposes. Additionally, the role requires the ability to repeatedly lift up to 30 pounds and perform physical tasks such as pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting as part of daily work assignments.
