JOB SUMMARY

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Academic Services Center (ASC) is seeking applicants for a full-time position as an Assistant Director (Student Services Program Manager 1). Under the supervision of the Director of Academic Services, the incumbent will perform a variety of advising, administrative and supervisory functions. The successful candidate will oversee a group of advisors while maintaining a caseload of advisees and will be responsible for the coordination and delivery of advising programs and services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Work with ASC leaders to support undergraduate education in the college.
  2. Oversee and manage the work of assigned personnel, including assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance, and conducting performance evaluations (jointly with DUS/dept heads as appropriate).
  3. Plan, implement, and manage the operation and delivery of advising services in an assigned area.
  4. Prepare reports for senior leaders on departmental course offerings and identify course pressures while maintaining and tracking data year over year for historical measures.
  5. Collaborate with department heads and undergraduate directors on academic advising matters.
  6. Advise and train staff and faculty advisors on CLAS degree requirements, and on other College and University undergraduate policies and procedures. 
  7. Make programmatic resource allocation decisions impacting supervisees under the rules and regulations of the CLAS Academic Services Center.
  8. Plan and organize workshops, training programs, and training materials, in accordance with College goals, to provide professional development opportunities to supervisees.
  9. Collect and analyze program data, participate in evaluating and assessing program effectiveness, help identify problems, and make suggestions for improved efficiencies as appropriate.
  10. Engage in public and promotional activities for the College, and implement recruiting and promotional strategies as necessary.
  11. Interprets, implements, and enforces departmental, University, and College academic policies and regulations. Make recommendations regarding student dismissal and readmission. 
  12. Acts as Dean’s Designee on matters relating to degree requirements. 
  13. Advise and counsel CLAS undergraduates on academic requirements and audit degree progress. 
  14. Attend and/or conduct events/meetings on behalf of the CLAS Academic Services Center.
  15. Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, or a related field.  
  • Four years of experience in academic advising with an intimate understanding of liberal arts curriculum. 
  • Proven ability to lead and work in team settings.
  • Proven ability to manage team dynamics.
  • Experience dealing with large data sets relating to undergraduate education.
  • Proven ability to identify and recommend/implement changes to academic policy and regulations.  
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience mentoring or supervising professional or student staff. 
  • Experience working with administrators, faculty, and parents/guardians in an advising/professional setting. 
  • Experience with student data mining and analysis.
  • Ability to engage, connect, and work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of UConn’s undergraduate programs and degree requirements, including those of CLAS.  
  • Familiarity with higher education systems such as PeopleSoft, Webfocus, or Earnest.
