The Institute of Materials Science (IMS) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) is looking for a Laboratory Manager (Research Assistant 2) for the Electrical Insulation Research Center (EIRC). IMS is an interdisciplinary Institute with a threefold mission fostering education, research, and outreach in all areas of the materials sciences. Within IMS, the UConn Electrical Insulation Research Center (EIRC) has 40 years of established excellence in conducting academic-based research that not only produces seminal scientific work, but also brings meaningful contributions to power, aviation, and defense industries. EIRC is currently the home of several large federal government programs, such as the prestigious NSF Industrial/University Cooperative Research Center on High Voltage/Temperature Materials/Structures (NSF HVT) and the Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives (MURIs) sponsored by ONR, many vibrant projects funded by ARPA-e, ONR, NASA, as well as carrying out long-established industrial collaborative work with dozens of companies.


  • Coordinate, oversee, and be responsible for the effective and safe management of EIRC
  • Maintain and manage the lab space, high-voltage testing equipment, and research facilities
  • Provide support to research teams for various procurement, inventory management, and EIRC bookkeeping activities
  • Supervise and train research personnel who work at EIRC
  • Conduct independent research and development projects on high-voltage and dielectric testing, including insulation material characterization for industrial partners
  • Represent EIRC and EIRC-based consortium at scientific/professional conferences and meetings with industry
  • Publish papers and generate appropriate reports


  • B.S. in electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, physics, or another related discipline
  • Three or more years of post-degree experience
  • Demonstrated practical problem-solving skills in research or industrial setting
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage insulation techniques
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)


  • Post-graduate degree(s) in a related field
  • Five or more years of industrial work experience in high-voltage
  • Strong experience in physical and chemical analysis for insulation failure analysis using both standard and modified test methods
  • Sound knowledge of scientific principles applied to highly specialized tasks and laboratory techniques of moderate difficulty
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications


This is a full-time end-dated position. Salary will be commensurate with training and experience.
