Introduction:

These positions are categorized as “Open to Agency Only” and are only open to current qualified NP-2 Employees at UConn that have obtained permanent status. 

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department has three job openings for Skilled Maintainer positions that will be required to perform job duties to support the Public Works Department. These are permanent, full-time positions, Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., 37.5 hours per week with an unpaid half an hour for lunch. These positions report to Maintenance Supervisor 1 – Grounds positions. The hourly salary will be determined at the time of job offer based on the employee’s current job classification and step and is non-negotiable.

These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to work non-premium holidays.

Please note that Facilities Operations NP-2 employees may also be required to perform job duties as assigned at any of the Regional Campuses.

Examples of Duties:

At UConn, Skilled Maintainers are required to perform work assignments to support the staff within the Public Works Department, which includes performing tasks related to, but not limited to all aspects of grounds maintenance – including waste removal, snow and ice removal, and may act as a laborer to assist QCW Utilities and QCW Masonry employees with retaining walls, road and sidewalk repairs, and general sitework. These positions may supervise student employees.

Skilled Maintainers are required to drive a variety of trucks and to operate a variety of equipment and tools. Vehicles, equipment and tools must be maintained and kept clean and in good working condition.

The candidate selected for this position will be required to complete job related training courses within the first six months of hire.

Incumbents in this area perform in one of the following ways:

1. Working supervisor: 

  • Directs a crew of subordinate maintainers in such areas as planting and maintenance of lawns, shrubs, trees and flower beds (including planning and scheduling); 
  • Maintenance and installation of fencing; 
  • Cleaning of grounds, service areas and sidewalks (including snow and ice removal); 
  • Operation and maintenance of grounds equipment; 
  • Planting, cultivating, harvesting and storage of vegetables (including a vegetable growing program); 
  • Weed, disease and pest control; 
  • Performs other grounds tasks listed in the specification for lower level maintainers;
  • Supervisory tasks can include such things as planning and scheduling work;
    • Completing service ratings; Performance appraisal; 
    • Handling disciplinary problems; 
    • Staff training; 
    • Making certain work standards are being met; 
    • Maintaining necessary supplies and equipment; 
    • Submitting requisitions when needed;
  • An incumbent in this position should be considered a working supervisor.

2. Substantial amount of time (75%) operates and makes minor and emergency repairs on complex equipment such as front end loaders, very large tractors and the like.

3. Performs specialized landscaping tasks such as flower garden landscaping, athletic field preparation and maintenance, and other non-routine landscaping functions.

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, materials and procedures of specific trade or work area concerned;

Minimum Qualifications - General Experience

Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas:

  • One of the skilled trades;
  • Landscape maintenance or vegetable gardening;
  • Operation of motor trucks or large buses.

The experience area should reflect the needs of the position.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General Experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1.  Knowledge and experience in a variety of landscaping skills performed during all four seasons of the year.
  2. Knowledge and experience in the identification of trees and plants.
  3. Snow and ice removal experience including the operation of equipment and the use of deicing products.
  4. Experience working at a college campus or similar setting.
  5. Knowledge and ability to work with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) such as AiM.
  6. Experience using an iPad.
  7. Ability to multi-task.
  8. Strong customer service skills.
  9. Strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
  10. Supervisory ability.

Special Requirements

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  3. Applicants must have a current motor vehicle operator license.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  2. A physical examination may be required.
  3. Incumbents in this class will be required to drive and operate motor vehicles, including, but not limited to vans, box trucks, and pick-up trucks ranging in size from compact, midsize, full-size, and heavy-duty, some of which are equipped with lift gates. Incumbents will also be required to operate landscape equipment such as mowers and Bobcat Toolcats.
  4. Incumbents must have adequate physical strength and agility to walk up and down stairs frequently and climb ladders independently. Must be able lift, carry and push material weighing up to 75 lbs. Must have the ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding, high-lifts and enter confined spaces. Must be able to perform inspections, alterations, repairs and maintenance of structures and facilities. Incumbents must possess the ability to utilize tools, perform the required duties set forth above and will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

Working Conditions

  1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to significant levels of dust, heat, noise, extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive individuals.
  2. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
