JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Finance provides strategic leadership and oversight for all financial functions of the Waterbury campus. This position leads the development, execution, and monitoring of the campus budget and is responsible for managing complex financial operations across multiple funding sources while ensuring full compliance with university policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices in financial stewardship. This position additionally supports key human resource functions as they relate to financial planning, personnel budgeting, and workforce management, ensuring alignment between staffing decisions and fiscal strategy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development, management, and oversight of the campus operating budget, ensuring compliance with university policies, accounting standards, and external regulations.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on financial performance, including revenue, expenditures, and projections.
  • Prepare and submit quarterly budget reports, forecasts, and financial analyses. Develop additional financial reports, dashboards, and presentations for leadership and stakeholders as needed.
  • Manage and reconcile multiple ledger accounts across multiple fund sources, including university, foundation and research funding, ensuring effective allocation of resources, accurate financial reporting, and resolution of complex fiscal issues.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve complex financial issues and discrepancies.
  • Develop financial models and long-range forecasts to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Provide financial guidance and recommendations to the Campus Dean and senior leadership, including position planning and workforce budgeting.
  • Oversee financial transactions, including revenue, expense, and procurement activity, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure proper documentation and audit readiness.
  • Supervise staff responsible for financial processing, budgeting, and fiscal reporting.
  • Collaborate with central finance offices, auditors, and external partners as needed.
  • Develop and monitor personnel budgets, including salary projections, fringe benefits, and salary savings.
  • Provide financial analysis and guidance for hiring decisions, reclassifications, and compensation changes.
  • Coordinate with central Human Resources on hiring processes, onboarding, and personnel transactions to ensure financial accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee payroll funding allocations and ensure appropriate distribution across funding sources.
  • Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in related field.
  2. Six to seven years of related experience.
  3. Experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  4. Experience supervising staff, especially in a high volume and cross-disciplinary environment.
  5. Experience creating, executing, and monitoring budgets and financial forecasts to achieve established goals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience in higher education or a similarly complex, multi-fund environment.
  2. Experience managing sponsored programs, grants, or foundation funds.
  3. Demonstrated familiarity with university financial systems and reporting structures.
