JOB SUMMARY

The UConn Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility (PMF) (https://proteomics.uconn.edu) has an opening for a full-time Facility Scientist 2. The Facility Scientist will assist the Facility Director with quantitative metabolomics analysis using advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation and complex bioinformatics software.

UConn PMF opened in 2017 as the University of Connecticut’s first fully dedicated proteomics and metabolomics core facility and is housed administratively within the Center for Open Research Resources and Equipment (COR²E). PMF has outstanding instrumentation including 2 Waters TOFs, 2 Thermo Scientific Orbitraps, and a Bruker timsTOF HT and is expanding its footprint to the UConn Health medical research campus in Farmington, CT with a brand-new Bruker timsTOF Ultra 2 mass spectrometer.  UConn PMF exists to provide fully customized analysis, user training, and educational opportunities in analytical techniques to more than 200 faculty across multiple UConn campuses and external academic and industry research institutions. This position is a full-time appointment and will provide a unique opportunity to work in a rapidly growing and highly productive core facility at a large research university currently ranked in the top 25 of all public universities in the U.S.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or a related field.
  2. Two or more years of experience implementing sample preparation techniques and tandem mass spectrometry for metabolite identification and quantification.
  3. Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) instrumentation.
  4. Publication history that demonstrates the successful application of UPLC-MS/MS methods for quantitative metabolomic analysis.
  5. Demonstrated experience with commonly used metabolomics software platforms for compound identification and quantification such as Progenesis QI, Metaboscape, MS-DIAL, or MetaboAnalyst.
  6. Demonstrated experience using communication skills and to inform researchers with varied scientific backgrounds about analytical techniques and informatics methods.
  7. Experience working with and/or training scientists in a highly collaborative environment that emphasizes comprehensive analysis and one-on-one consultations with researchers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Doctoral degree in chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, or a related field.
  2. Experience with collaborative research and/or work experience in a core facility setting.
  3. Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting experience using Bruker timsTOF, Waters TOF and/or Thermo Scientific Orbitrap mass spectrometers.
  4. Experience with UPLC-MS/MS-based lipidomic analysis.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, grant-funded, 12-month position with an anticipated start date of March 6, 2026. This position is subject to annual renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance and budget funding. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the American Association of University Professors UConn Chapter (AAUP).
