JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Information Technology Services (ITS), is seeking a technical and self-motivated Data Center Administrator 2. Under the direction of the Data Center Team Lead, this position will be responsible for facilitating the installation of voice, video, and network equipment for all departments within the University. This technical, service-oriented position is based on the Storrs campus in support of the universities’ multiple data center locations and operational services. The nature of this position requires the employee to be on site. Th successful candidate will have high technical knowledge and ability as well as the ability to collaborate well with people and work with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform site surveys for data center equipment requests.
  • Coordinate daily activities, deliveries, and installations network equipment request.
  • Schedule work and coordinate access for data center tenants, customers, or vendors.
  • Installation of network equipment, including start-up, implementation, and documentation.
  • Review installations for quality control and code compliance for outside vendors.
  • Train students or contracted resources to work in and update our record systems.
  • Preserve the integrity of data center infrastructure including documentation.
  • Administer maintenance activities for network devices such as servers, switches, firewalls etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information in compliance with University Information Security Policies.
  • Coordinate with vendors or contractors to facilitate preventative maintenance on data center uninterrupted power supplies, air conditioning units and fire suppression systems.
  • Actively engage with other teams for large scale network projects.
  • Review specifications provided by design professionals.
  • Facilitate communication with university departments to address specific project interests.
  • Decommissioning of legacy equipment and associated documentation.
  • Troubleshooting and testing equipment / circuits in the data center.
  • Work in the Jira ticketing system.
  • Coordinate IT/telecom resources for large network equipment deployment and installations.
  • Review and process change orders.
  • Review test reports and documents.
  • Administer the Ecostruxure monitoring platform.
  • Work independently with guidance from a supervisor.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Education or experience
    1. Associates degree in related field with six years of related experience in the design, planning, specifications, and management of telecommunication network /information technology infrastructure. OR;
    2. Bachelor’s degree in related field with four years of related experience in the design, planning, specifications, and management of telecommunication network /information technology infrastructure. OR;
    3. Eight years of experience in telecommunications infrastructure design, installation, testing and commissioning with two years of related experience in the design, planning, specification, and management of telecommunication network /information technology infrastructure.
  2. Demonstrated experience reviewing electrical and telecommunication design documents for network infrastructure, and network equipment / material specifications.
  3. Documented electrical training from a recognized educational institution with knowledge of the National Electrical code.
  4. Demonstrated experience installing fiber optic and copper cable circuits to include troubleshooting, labeling, and documentation.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of productivity software such as Microsoft Office Suite.
  6. Demonstrated written communication skills.
  7. Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated experience with planning, generating, editing, and organizing drawings using AutoCAD or Visio.
  2. Proven familiarity or use of IT help desk/trouble tickets systems.
  3. Demonstrated experience reviewing designs and specifications for Data Center projects.
  4. Experience replacing network blades, power supplies, and network modules.
  5. Proven exposure to or experience with data center monitoring platforms such as Ecostruxure.
  6. Experience with training technicians, apprentices or students on standards, codes, industry best practices, installation of or testing optical fiber, telephone, and network cabling.
  7. Maintain an electrical trade license such as a E, C, T or TLT.
  8. Work experience in a campus environment, university, or similar institution.
  9. Experience coordinating network connections for AV, card access, IP cameras, SCADA, High Performance Computing.
  10. Knowledge of UConn and/or State of CT procurement procedures and regulations.
  11. Familiarity/knowledge of University of CT, Storrs Campus Buildings, and locations.
  12. Experience with project cost estimation and contractor oversight.

The chosen incumbent for this position must be a U.S. Citizen. The Information Technology Services Data Center houses and maintains equipment and systems with restrictions to U.S. Citizens (SRI). U.S. Citizenship and employment eligibility will be verified at time of offer.
