INTRODUCTION 

The Department of Psychological Sciences and El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor for a joint position in Latinx Psychology.

While the area of specialization is open, we are particularly interested in applicants with a demonstrated scholarly interest in Afro-diasporic Latinx experiences whose research and teaching will engage the Latinx community in Hartford, Connecticut. UConn Hartford is a Minority Serving Institution and an emergent Hispanic Serving Institution. Psychological Science (PSYC) is the highest-enrolled and most sought-after major for undergraduates at UConn Hartford. It is one of six CLAS programs in which students are able to complete their Bachelor of Arts degree at UConn Hartford. El Instituto is a multidisciplinary research and teaching institute in the University of Connecticut’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. El Instituto's major in Latino and Latin American Studies unites the teaching of research skills with learning in service of communities. Its minor in Latino Studies has also recently become available to UConn Hartford students.

The Psychological Sciences Department includes Ph.D. programs in Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical, Developmental, Ecological, I/O, Language and Cognition, and Social Psychology. There are currently 58 FT faculty and 130 FT doctoral students. El Instituto includes an MA program in Latino and Latin American Studies that incubates interdisciplinary study and research in Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies.    

Centered on teaching, research, and service in and about the global city, the UConn Hartford campus serves a community of approximately 1600 students, including larger first-generation (49%) and minoritized (50%) populations. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • A Ph.D. in Psychological Sciences or international equivalent by the appointment start date.
  • Commitment to equity and excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students within the Psychological Sciences Department and El Instituto.
  • Demonstrated understanding of barriers to equitable outcomes in STEM fields.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or public engagement via past actions, lived experience, or a detailed plan for future work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • A record of peer-reviewed publications and evidence of (or promise of) obtaining external research support.
  • A vibrant research agenda centered on Afro-Latinx studies with psychological research, allowing for interdisciplinary work. 
  • Ability or commitment to teach an undergraduate course in support of both units' undergraduate teaching missions, including in Latinx studies. 
  • Record of excellence in or potential for teaching and mentoring traditionally underserved undergraduate students.
  • Ability to strengthen the undergraduate research experience at UConn Hartford.
  • Experience working in an urban campus setting or the understanding and knowledge of the impact of the urban setting on teaching and the student experience.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This appointment is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Hartford campus.
