INTRODUCTION

The Philosophy Department of the University of Connecticut at Storrs invites applications for a tenure-track appointment of Assistant Professor with AOS: Applied Ethics, and AOC: Bioethics, Health and Medical Ethics, Environmental Ethics, or Ethics of Technology/AI. The ideal candidate would address ethical issues connecting health, medical, environmental, or technological challenges, and additional areas of specialization or competence would include the impact of these problems on historically racialized and marginalized communities.  

We are especially looking for work showing attention to health disparities, environmental racism, or the impact of technology on inequalities and social justice. Accordingly, competence in areas such as Africana Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy, Decolonial Philosophy, and/or Indigenous Philosophy would be desirable. The ideal candidate would also have an opportunity to collaborate with UConn’s vibrant centers, departments, institutes, and programs with which the Philosophy Department has strong relationships. They include the Human Rights Institute (HRI), the Humanities Institute, the Institute for the Brain and Cognitive Sciences (IBACS), the Program in Cognitive Science, the MA and Graduate Certificate Program in Intersectionality, Indigeneity, Race, Ethnicity, and Politics (IIREP), Philosophy and Global Affairs, Asian and Asian American Studies, El Instituto, Africana Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The Philosophy Department has a variety of active research groups through which these collaborations are built: The Vice Squad (focusing on social ethics and virtue theory), Expression, Communication, and the Origins of Meaning (ECOM), The Logic Group, Philosophy and Global Affairs, and the Social Epistemology Working Group. This constellation of research groups is part of the Philosophy Department’s aim of building a department that substantially contributes to addressing twenty-first century problems and offers insights for the development of a dynamic role for UConn in shaping a contemporary global society conducive to human dignity and planetary well-being.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS   

  • Ph.D. in philosophy, or international equivalent or closely-related discipline by August 2023.   
  • Strong research focus on a social-oriented approach to the study of applied ethics, with competence in bioethics, health and medical ethics, environmental ethics, or ethics of technology/AI.  
  • Evidence of research productivity. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to effective and inclusive teaching with a diverse student population, and demonstrated ability to teach in our strong Ph.D. program.  
  • The ability to contribute substantially through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the Philosophy Department, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the University.  
  • The ability to foster and support diversity, inclusion, and equity through academic and research programs. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS   

  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary work.   
  • Demonstrated experience with community-engaged scholarship.  

APPOINTMENT TERMS  

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2023.   The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
