This position is a core member of the UConn Recreation professional team, having primary responsibility for providing athletic training services for the Competitive Sports Program.  With a total undergraduate enrollment of 18,917 and over 70% of students living on-campus, UConn provides a vibrant, diverse, and exciting educational community. UConn Recreation also operates numerous satellite recreational facilities across campus, and looks forward to opening a brand new artificial turf practice and competition space in fall 2021.

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director or designee, the Director of Athletic Training is responsible for the daily administration and implementation of athletic training services for UConn Recreation.  This position implements a wide variety of day-to-day responsibilities designed to enhance operational performance, ensure participant safety, and provide quality service to members of the Student Recreation Center. Weekend and evening work is required.

Program Management

  1. Provide on-site athletic training support for Competitive Sports
  2. Serve as Competitive Sports Site Manager ensuring program policy, maintenance, safety, and customer service needs are met
  3. Implement risk management policy and procedure for all activities
  4. Provide timely and accurate participant health, incident, accident, and risk management reporting
  5. Maintain accurate and accessible records related to all athletic training activities including participation, financial and maintenance reporting
  6. Procure supplies and equipment in support of UConn Recreation participant health and safety
  7. Coordinate maintenance of participant safety equipment with internal and external constituents
  8. Maintain accurate inventory of all athletic training equipment and operational resources
  9. Provide direct support of events hosted by UConn Recreation
  10. Drive department vehicles in support of athletic training operations including competition site and special event coverage
  11. Develop and expand professional knowledge of athletic training in order to ensure quality and meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff
  12. Assist with planning, development, promotion, and execution of a comprehensive ongoing schedule of competitive sports programming

Personnel Management

  1. Provide supervision for graduate assistant athletic trainers
  2. Coordinate and schedule contract athletic training services
  3. Provide supervisory support to student employees in the performance of their daily responsibilities
  4. Promote and maintain high-quality performance standards for Competitive Sports personnel
  5. Create and implement ongoing student employee training and development programs
  6. Evaluate athletic training staff performance, providing written evaluation on an annual basis
  7. Maintain employee scheduling, monitor for accuracy, and provide payroll verification
  8. Work in collaboration with Competitive Sports leadership to hire new athletic training personnel

Planning & Assessment

  1. Provide timely and accurate reporting of participant health and safety compliance
  2. Recommend operational and programmatic changes based on continuing need assessment
  3. Assist in the development of the annual operating budget and end of year report
  4. Recommend annual program, equipment, facility, maintenance, policy, and budgetary needs
  5. Annually review and revise department Emergency Response Plans with Operations unit
  6. Provide a report of athletic training outcomes in conjunction with the Competitive Sports annual report

Additional Duties

  1. Provide leadership for assigned departmental programs and events
  2. Coordinate, schedule and instruct CPR/First Aid/AED classes for the department
  3. Manage department accident documentation and participant follow-up
  4. Serve on department or university assigned work teams and committees
  5. Serve as Student Recreation Center Manager on Duty as required
  6. Additional duties as requested by supervisor or departmental leadership


  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field  
  2. One (1) year of documented experience at the high school or collegiate level as an Athletic Trainer
  3. Demonstrated organizational skills necessary to independently manage multiple projects
  4. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information
  6. Demonstrated understanding of, stated commitment to and/or experience working with diverse populations
  7. Current Adult CPR/AED Certification
  8. Current Basic Life Support certification
  9. Certified Athletic Trainer
  10. Valid Connecticut Athletic Trainer State License or eligible to receive within 2 months
  11. Valid driver’s license and ability to acquire Connecticut Passenger “A” endorsement or equivalent


  1. Master’s degree
  2. Two (2) years of documented experience at the high school or collegiate level as an Athletic Trainer
  3. Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach
  4. Direct experience working in student service
  5. Demonstrated experience facilitating employee development and training
  6. Demonstrated experience integrating principles of diversity and inclusion into all aspects of athletic training
  7. Proficient with software applications related to department operations (e.g. Fusion, Connect2Concepts, Sub-it-Up)
  8. First-Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification


This is a full-time, one-year calendar appointment with an 11-month term. This position is subject to annual renewal and does not lead to permanent academic tenure. You must specifically be renewed in writing in order to continue employment beyond the one-year calendar date. This position has an anticipated start date of September 10, 2021.
