JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Avery Point Campus is seeking applications for the position of Academic Advisor 1. Working under the general direction and administrative guidance of the Avery Point Director of Advising, the incumbent will perform a variety of advising and administrative functions to assist undergraduate students at the Avery Point Campus. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advise students in curriculum decisions including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters.
  • Plan and refer academic programming related to students’ educational needs, future career planning, and professional development.
  • Review and make recommendations regarding academic warning, probation, or dismissal.
  • Audit student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements and to assess eligibility to graduate.
  • Contribute to the campus scheduling committee with planning and determining course offerings for upcoming semesters.
  • Assist in orientation programming, and other activities as assigned; create and deliver presentation materials for associated events.
  • Serve as a resource for students, faculty, parents and guardians, and others having questions about programs or academic policies.
  • Coordinate and implement programs to promote recruitment and retention of students.
  • Create, maintain, and appropriately update files, records, and student documentation and assist in compiling reports.
  • Serve as an instructor for the First Year Experience (FYE) course.
  • Perform related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or a related field and 3 years of experience in academic counseling or advising; OR Master's degree and one year of experience in academic counseling or advising. 
  2. Proven ability to counsel and advise students as it relates to their personal, educational, and career goals.
  3. Experience working in a team-oriented environment.
  4. Proven ability to develop relationships with students, faculty, administrators, and parents/guardians.
  5. Demonstrated written communication and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s degree in a related field.
  2. Experience working with administrators, faculty, and parents/guardians in an advising setting.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of UConn’s undergraduate programs and degree requirements.
  4. Demonstrated familiarity with PeopleSoft or with similar higher education systems.
