INTRODUCTION

The School of Public Policy (SPP) at the University of Connecticut seeks to fill a one-year visiting position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor starting in August 2024. The ideal candidate will have experience or be prepared to teach graduate-level courses in applied microeconomics, public economics/policy analysis, and quantitative methods. The School of Public Policy is home to a Master of Public Administration (MPA), a Master of Public Policy (MPP), an MPA Fellows program (an executive MPA cohort) in Hartford and Stamford, and four graduate certificates in nonprofit management, public financial management, survey research, and leadership and public management.

The School of Public Policy is located on the University of Connecticut’s Hartford Campus in Hartford, Connecticut. The University of Connecticut is a premier research institution – designated as a Research University/Very High research activity by the Carnegie Foundation. The School of Public Policy has 16 core faculty members and over 1,400 alumni. The school’s programs are ranked by the U.S. News and World Report as 39th among public programs and 9th among public finance and budgeting programs.

This position will be filled at the Visiting Assistant Professor level. This is primarily a teaching position. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in public policy and/or other areas of specialization within the school. Strong preference will be given to applicants who are prepared to teach graduate-level courses in applied microeconomics, policy analysis, or quantitative methods. Finally, the best candidates will provide clear evidence of contributions to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience through teaching, and/or public engagement. The specific teaching assignment will be determined based on the needs of the school and might include graduate or undergraduate classes at the Hartford Campus or the main campus in Storrs. Duties include teaching and service to the School and University.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Ph.D. (A.B.D. is acceptable) in public administration, public policy, economics, political science, sociology, or a related field.
2. Candidates must have a strong record of, or strong potential for, scholarly excellence based on rigorous social science research methods.
3. Candidates must demonstrate strong communication skills and the capability to teach program evaluation and policy analysis.
4. Applicants with advanced ABDs may be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed their Ph.D. and who have demonstrated teaching excellence and superior communication skills.
2. Candidates who contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience are preferred.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, temporary position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2024. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Hartford Campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at UConn’s main campus in Storrs, or online, as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
