JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Dining Services at the University of Connecticut has multiple openings for Assistant Area Managers. These positions report to the Area Manager or appropriate designee and assist in providing effective supervision and leadership within the Department of Dining Services. We are seeking hands-on individuals dedicated to enhancing our ongoing development as a first-class college dining program focused on superior culinary experiences and excellent customer service. The successful candidate must be committed to delivering high-quality services in an efficient manner while being sensitive to the service needs of the entire University. This position will require working weekends and possibly working until 11:00 pm during the week.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A successful candidate will exhibit enthusiasm as a “floor manager” supervising both front and back of the house operations; will also be accessible to all employees, provide ongoing training, and will seek to encourage customer feedback through regular interaction. Assists in operating and maintaining an efficient and effective food production and service system; ensures safe and sanitary conditions, in accordance with appropriate standards, laws, policies, and regulations. Directly supervises production and maintenance operations in assigned residence halls or food production areas; leads the work of assigned personnel, including creating work schedules, prioritizing tasks, and providing guidance. Oversees computerized food waste tracking system and trains staff on its usage. Conducts training programs for Dining Service employees; participates in evaluating training needs. Participates in planning menus and providing nutrition education for students. Develops and updates product specifications. Assists in ordering food/beverages and supplies and is responsible for the safe and sanitary receiving of such supplies and food. Maintains appropriate records, including financial and student personnel records. Prepares information and/or reports as required. Identifies areas for improvement in services, cost effectiveness, physical facilities, and other areas of operation to meet changing needs and priorities. Assists in promoting Dining Services programs. Develops and maintains good customer relations; follows through to ensure complaints are resolved promptly. Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition, institutional management, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain ServSafe Certification within 12 months of start date.
  • Experience supervising professional food service staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of food ordering, storage, sanitation, and inventory control. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of menu planning, quantity food preparation, merchandising, and service.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
  • Articulated commitment to, demonstrated understanding of, and/or experience working with diverse populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registration as a Registered Dietitian. 
  • ServSafe certification.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

The annual salary is $56,102 with outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
